Cafe Hula on Hope Street just round the corner from the Academy was really within my comfort zone. Each table and chair was different offering a cosy country kitchen feel and a talking point at every corner. The dark decor with something different on every shelf to look at when conversation dries up with the main object d'art clearly the robed skeleton in the centre which appeared oddly at home. I had a cup of fruit tea but assured I'd feel just at home with a ploughman's and cider or a bottle of red and a chunky soup.
The Val D'oro was comforting too in another way, in fact in another era. The 50s formica fittings and gaudy decor felt like the only place to eat a fish tea with condiments from the plastic bottles arranged in the booths. There was something quite nostalgic about the brown sauce thinned down with vinegar whilst chatting to Mary in her fat scented T-shirt and jogging trousers.
